A brilliantly colourful perennial, purple loosestrife is widespread throughout most of the British Isles, being locally common along the banks of slow-moving rivers and canals, on the margins of ponds and lakes and in marshes. It prefers fertile, neutral to alkaline soils and will tolerate light shade. It is an excellent insect plant and you would create a little wildlife haven if you planted it in a bog or marsh garden together with yellow loosestrife and meadowsweet. Grows best in full sun. Ht 2-4ft.  Food plant for Emperor, V-Pug and Powdered Quaker moths
