Marsh Mallow (Althaea officinalis) HP/BB/BN
A tall softly hairy perennial growing up to 1.5m tall with an upright stem bearing pink-mauve flowers in late summer. Makes an excellent feature plant for moist soil in sun, and is found in the wild in open damp meadows and ditches, especially near the sea, mainly in the southern half of the British Isles. Can be used to treat mouth and throat infections and gastric ulcers. Marsh mallow sweets were originally flavoured with extract from the roots of the plant.
