Water Avens (Geum rivale) HP/BB/BN
Water Avens is an unusual and delicate plant ideal for growing in wet soil by the side of a pond where the elegantly drooping, bell-shaped salmon-pink flowers are reflected in the water. This plant prefers shady conditions and despite being native to damp woodlands will stand reasonably dry soil in shade. Flowers are produced throughout the summer and the plant will grow to 1.5-2ft. Common in northern Britain, but scattered elsewhere in wet meadows, marshes, damp woodlands and streamsides up to 975m above sea level. Pollinated by bumblebees.
