Familiar cottage garden favourite recorded in gardens as early as 1580, it has now been hybridised many times for modern tastes. The true wildflower retains charm and simplicity. Its distribution is localised and decreasing but found in many parts of Britain as far north as Southern Scotland. Traditionally blue, pink mauve and pink forms can also be seen. It prefers the dappled shade of damp woodlands, marshes and fens. In the garden it will appreciate some shade from the midday sun but will not be too fussy and will self-seed where happy. Ht 1-3ft. Pollinated by long-tongued bumblebees. Harmful if eaten
