Common dog-violet (Viola riviniana) HP/BB/BN
A flower of the hedgerow and woodland clearings this is a delightful plant that reminds me of spring horse rides in Cornwall – one of the first flowers seen in the hedgerows peeping out amongst the brambles. It will quickly form a carpet of these lovely mauve flowers. The dog-violet is an important butterfly and caterpillar food for the fritillary butterflies. Ht 1-8in. Can be grown in sun or semi-shade in any soil.
