The thyme family has numerous species that are very diverse and come from many different parts of the world.  This ancient herb was used by the Egyptians for embalming, the Greeks put it in their baths and the Romans used it to purify their rooms.  It is one of my favourite herbs and mine is never allowed to flower as the shoots are being constantly used in cooking.
To get the best flavour, thymes need to be grown in poor, very well draining soil in sun.  It is a hardy evergreen but need protection from cold winds and winter wet.  Up here in the wet Peak District, I find it does best in a container or a in raised sunny bed. This is the most popular thyme and in my opinion the best for cooking.  Mauve flowers in summer above thin green aromatic leaves.  Ht 12in S 8in or more in the right position.
