Derived from the Latin ‘lava’- to wash, lavender was used by the Romans to scent their bath water. Its wonderful fragrance has been used for perfumes, insect-repellents and for masking household and street smells. It also has a peculiar power to ease stiff joints and relieve tiredness. Lavender likes a well-draining soil and a sunny, warm spot. "Hidcote' has dark blue flowers, short, narrow grey-greenish leaves with a compact habit, all highly fragrant. Ht and S 18in. Very popular and often used for a low hedge.
