A commonly grown old-fashioned cottage garden herbaceous perennial with the classic daisy appearance of white petals (ray florets) around a yellow disc, similar to the wild oxeye daisy but much larger. The leaves are very dark green and shiny and form a dense mass clump from which the flower stems emerge. Ht to 1m S indefinite. Very showy if allowed to really establish.
It originated as a hybrid produced in 1890 by the American horticulturist Luther Burbank and it was named after Mount Shasta in California, because its petals were the colour of the snow. The Shasta daisy remains a favourite garden plant and provided excellent groundcover where allowed to spread.
