Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
An elegant back of the border plant as well as being a useful herb, Fennel is a good seasoning for fatty meats such as pork and lamb, delicious with fish or as a salad or vegetable dressing. Also now being used in restaurants as a garnish instead of parsley. Soft green feathery foliage and numerous small yellow flowers held high in flattish plates. Ht 4-7ft S 18in. Likes a sunny, hot, well-drained spot. Don’t grow near dill or coriander, as the cross-pollination will reduce fennel’s seed production. Fennel attracts hoverflies so helps keep whitefly at bay. The seeds may also be used in cooking.
